It is a design scratched into the render, not painted onto it. A layer of tinted lime mortar – traditionally dark – is applied to the wall, then a pale finishing coat on top. While that coat is still fresh, the motif is scratched away: the line appears wherever the dark layer beneath is exposed. The design is therefore part of the wall itself. It cannot peel or flake off. It ages with the façade.

I do – but never on my own. The design comes out of a conversation: what the house has to say, what you want inscribed on it, what already exists in the surrounding area. I bring sketches, we work on them together, and I then produce the final full-size cartoon. You sign off before anything touches the wall – after that, there is no going back.

It is a collaboration. The substrate and the render coats are applied by a plasterer experienced in lime render, with whom I work. The scratching of the motif is done by me together with the plasterer, directly on the wall. If you would like to take part in the scratching yourself, that is possible on certain areas of the design – it is one of the things I most enjoy about this work.

Three reasons, and they belong together. First, a sgraffito gives a house a face: it sets it apart, it dates it, it says something about the people living in it. Second, lime is a breathable material, consistent with older building fabric and with an approach to renovation that avoids plastics. Third, this is a living tradition rather than a nostalgic quotation: there is no reason why today's motifs should be those of the seventeenth century.

You need a substrate that will accept lime render: historic masonry, stone, brick, or new construction designed for it. Façades already covered with a synthetic render or external wall insulation need to be assessed beforehand [to be specified according to your practice]. The work is carried out in the warmer months: lime needs frost-free temperatures to cure properly. I always look at the wall before committing.

A conversation, then a design phase, then the work itself. Two things to anticipate: consent from the local authority – altering a façade generally requires a building permit, and the rules are stricter in protected townscape zones or on listed buildings – and the budget, which depends on surface area, the condition of the substrate and the density of the design. You will receive a written quotation after the first conversation.

Ein Sgraffito ist ein in den Verputz gekratztes Dekor – nicht eine Malerei auf der Wand. Auf die Fassade kommt zuerst eine Schicht eingefärbter Kalkmörtel, traditionell dunkel, darüber eine helle Deckschicht. Solange diese noch frisch ist, wird das Motiv herausgekratzt: Die Linie erscheint dort, wo die dunkle Schicht freigelegt wird. Das Motiv ist damit Teil der Wand – es löst sich nicht ab, es blättert nicht. Es altert mit der Fassade.

Ich – aber nie allein. Der Entwurf entsteht im Gespräch: Was erzählt das Haus, was möchten Sie darauf festhalten, was gibt es in der Nachbarschaft bereits? Ich lege Skizzen vor, wir überarbeiten sie gemeinsam, dann erstelle ich den definitiven Karton im Massstab 1:1. Sie geben Ihr Einverständnis, bevor irgendetwas die Wand berührt – danach gibt es keinen Weg zurück.

Die Arbeit entsteht in Zusammenarbeit. Untergrund und Verputz werden von einer Gipserin / einem Gipser mit Erfahrung im Kalkputz ausgeführt, mit der/dem ich zusammenarbeite. Das Auskratzen des Motivs übernehme ich gemeinsam mit dem Handwerksbetrieb, direkt an der Wand. Wenn Sie beim Kratzen mitwirken möchten, ist das bei bestimmten Partien des Dekors möglich, es gehört zu dem, was ich an dieser Arbeit am liebsten mag.

Aus drei Gründen, die zusammenhängen. Erstens gibt ein Sgraffito dem Haus ein Gesicht: Es unterscheidet es, es datiert es, es sagt etwas über die Menschen aus, die darin wohnen. Zweitens ist Kalk ein diffusionsoffenes Material, stimmig mit historischer Bausubstanz und mit einem Sanierungsverständnis, das ohne Kunststoff auskommt. Drittens ist die Technik eine lebendige Tradition und kein nostalgisches Zitat: Die Motive von heute müssen nicht jene des 17. Jahrhunderts sein.

Es braucht einen Untergrund, der Kalkputz annimmt: historisches Mauerwerk, Naturstein, Backstein oder einen Neubau, der dafür vorgesehen ist. Fassaden mit bestehendem Kunstharzputz oder Aussenwärmedämmung müssen vorgängig abgeklärt werden. Gearbeitet wird in der warmen Jahreszeit: Kalk braucht frostfreie Temperaturen, um richtig abzubinden.

Zunächst ein Gespräch, dann die Planungsphase, anschliessend die eigentlichen Arbeiten. Zwei Dinge sind zu beachten: die Genehmigung der zuständigen Behörde – für Fassadenänderungen ist in der Regel eine Baubewilligung erforderlich, wobei die Vorschriften in denkmalgeschützten Stadtbildzonen oder bei denkmalgeschützten Gebäuden strenger sind – sowie das Budget, das von der Fläche, dem Zustand des Untergrunds und der Komplexität des Entwurfs abhängt. Nach dem ersten Gespräch erhalten Sie eine schriftliche Offerte.
